According to a survey on sexual harassment in Singapore in 2019, 56 percent of female respondents said that they had reported or told someone about the sexual harassment they have experienced. By comparison, 40 percent of male respondents had done so. According to the same survey, of those respondents who had experienced sexual harassment, 52 percent had reported or told someone about the incident.
In Singapore, the term “sexual harassment” does not yet have a legal definition. However, the Protection from Harassment Act (“POHA”) 2014 provides various criminal sanctions, civil and self-help remedies to better protect people from harassment and related anti-social behavior. Unfortunately, applying for an order under POHA is complicated and costly, as applicants would need a lawyer to assist in the preparation and submission of documents and subsequent proceedings.
