In South America, approximately 33.7 million people were estimated to be undernourished in 2020. An undernourished individual is here defined as a person whose habitual food intake is insufficient to maintain an active and healthy life. Since 2017, the number of undernourished people has been continuously increasing in this region. South America composes 64 percent of the total number of undernourished people in Latin America.
