In 2019, Uber acquired almost nine billion U.S. dollars in net cash provided by financing activities, and the transportation network company also invested heavily in 2019 - almost 800 million U.S. dollars were spent on investing activities.
Future-oriented investments
Investments made by Uber are mainly targeted at new technologies related to autonomous vehicles. Although such investments may be risky and do not always pay in the long term, Uber's revenue has increased significantly since 2016.
Questions over long-term profitability remain
When available cash is not sufficient to run operations or complete acquisitions, companies like Uber may need to incur additional indebtedness or raise extra capital. It is not unusual for new companies to rely on financing activities for a short while; however, Uber has been running at a loss for several years. As a result, the company's share prices plummeted after going public in the second quarter of 2019.
