Types of antimicrobials used in feed on U.S. cattle feedlots in 2016
There are currently many types of antimicrobial feed additives on the market in the U.S. A recent survey indicated that approximately 52.1 percent of cattle that were treated with antimicrobial feed additives were treated with monensin with tylosin. The second most consumed antimicrobial feed additive during that time was noncombination ionophore (monensin, lasalocid, laidlomycin) which was fed to about 48.8 percent of cattle. Antimicrobial feed additives have recently come under fire in U.S. media for their potential to affect human health by encouraging antimicrobial resistance.
