U.S. cattle feedlots are an important intersection for health given that beef is a primary food staple in the U.S. Antimicrobial usage in feedlots has been a common occurrence to prevent disease and encourage health among cattle herds. However, unregulated antimicrobial usage can have serious consequences for human and animal health including antimicrobial resistance. As of 2016, about 55.6 percent of cattle feedlots in the U.S. had used some medically important antimicrobial in their cattle feed. Comparatively, about 80 percent of feed lots had used injection antimicrobials on individual animals.
