Currently, laws in England require retailers with 250 or more employees to charge five pence for all single-use plastic carrier bags. In a 2019 survey, 48 percent of British respondents strongly supported this ban to be extended to smaller retailers with less than 250 employees. In the 2017/18 fiscal year, more than 1.2 billion single-use plastic carrier bags were issued by large supermarkets in England. Of this amount, approximately 333 million plastic carrier bags were issued by the UK's leading supermarket Tesco.
