In 2023, pork accounted for the highest production volume among main livestock products in Vietnam, amounting to approximately 4.9 billion metric tons. Vietnam was among the countries with the highest volume of pork production worldwide.

Pork consumption in Vietnam

In Vietnam, pork is the most consumed meat, accounting for approximately 70 percent of the total meat consumption in Vietnam, followed by poultry, beef, and veal. By 2029, the per capita consumption of pork is forecasted to reach 32.7 kilograms. In recent years, Vietnam's pork production has been significantly affected by the African swine flu, leading to an increase in consumer prices. Although the country's pork production meets 95 percent of domestic consumption, Vietnam continued to import this product from other countries to stabilize market prices and to meet the diverse meat consumption needs of Vietnamese people.

Livestock sector in Vietnam

The livestock sector is a vital component of Vietnam’s economy, providing employment opportunities for millions of people, particularly in rural areas. In Vietnam, the rearing of buffaloes and cattle is primarily focused on meat production, while the dairy cow population has been expanded to cater to processing needs, and partly for export purposes. As Vietnam faced a potential pork shortage due to the African swine flu, the country increased its cattle, poultry, and aquatic breeding to compensate. In 2022, the poultry stock in Vietnam reached roughly 545 million heads, and the cattle stock reached 6.3 million heads.
