The lowest death rate due to cancer was recorded in 2017, whereas for heart disease it was in 2011. Overall, the death rates for both have declined.

Data in the source report is based on information from death
certificates filed in the 50 U.S. states and the District of
Columbia from 1999 to 2017, as collected and processed by the
National Center for Health Statistics through the Vital Statistics
Cooperative Program. Death certificates are generally
completed by funeral directors, attending physicians, medical
examiners, and coroners. Please see page 8 of the NVSR report for more information on the data.
The death rates provided were per 100,000 population enumerated as of April 1 for 2000 and 2010, and estimated as of July 1 for all other years
