This statistic displays the volume of wastewater discharged in Canada in 2017, broken down by treatment type. In that year, some 106 million cubic meters of wastewater were directly discharged into a receiving body without any type of treatment.

Primary treatment removes a portion of suspended solids and organic matter by physical and/or chemical processes. Secondary treatment removes biodegradable organic matter and suspended solids using biological treatment processes and secondary settlement. Tertiary treatment further removes residual suspended solids, nutrients and/or other contaminants using various physical, chemical or biological processes. Combined sewer overflows (CSOs) are from sewers that convey both stormwater and wastewater that overflow into receiving bodies of water without treatment. No treatment indicates wastewater discharged into water bodies without treatment.
