Italy: leading destination countries for exports of wine 2023

In 2023, the United States was the main destination country for Italy’s wine exports. In that year, the value of wine exported from Italy to the U.S. reached roughly 1.8 billion euros, according to the data. Germany and the United Kingdom were the second and the third major destination countries for Italian wine exports. However, the British were fonder of bubbles than the Germans. Indeed, for sparkling wine, the UK surpassed Germany in the ranking.

The COVID-19 impact on wine exports

The United States thus spend a great amount of money on importing wine from Italy. In April 2020 alone, the value of wine sold by Italian companies to the U.S. reached over 135 million euros. However, the value of wine exports from Italy to the U.S. dropped by 7.5 percent when compared to April 2019. Due to the Coronavirus pandemic, Italian wine producers also saw the value of their exports to China halved.

An export-oriented business

The majority of leading Italian wine producers get most of their revenues from exports. About half of these revenues come from exports to the Western European market. Another 30 percent is generated in NAFTA countries, with the United States accounting for a large part of this figure.
