Electricity production in Norway by ownership 2021

The highest volume of electricity produced in Norway in 2021 came from county- or municipally owned power stations. Their combined production reached a volume of nearly 73 terawatt hours, while the total electricity production volume was over 151 terawatt hours that year. Hydropower is the main source of electricity production for county- or municipally owned power stations.

Renewable energy in Norway

   Almost all energy produced in Norway is derived from renewables, mainly hydropower, which regularly accounts for over 90 percent of electricity production by source. The rest consists of thermal and wind power. Total hydropower production in 2021 reached a volume of around 144 terawatt hours.

Norwegian electricity exports

   Norway also exports some of its electricity, but the electricity exports varied over the years. For example, in 2010, around 7 terawatt hours of electricity was exported from Norway, and two years later this volume had increased significantly, up to around 22 terawatt hours exported. In 2019, the volume had dropped again, and was around 12.3 terawatt hours. Yet, figures rose to nearly 26 gigawatt hours in 2021.
