Value of wine exported from Italy 2019, by macro-region

According to the data provided by Prometeia, in 2019, the Asian countries made up the third market for the Italian export of wine. During that year, Italy exported wine to Asia for a total of 450 million euros. This value overtook the wine export towards new EU countries and other countries belonging to the European region. A significant part of the exported wine came from the northern part of the country. In 2019, the two Northern regions of Veneto and Piedmont alone made up over half of the total Italian wine export value.

The Asian market

In 2019, the share of export addressed to Asia amounted to 6.9 percent of the overall Italian wine export value. In comparison with the same figure of 2014, the export value increased by 0.7 percent. This appeared a rather low growth rate, although the Asian market was the second (after North-America) most relevant market outside the EU for Italy, both in 2014 and 2019.

China wine imports from Italy

In the Asian macro-region, China is among the most relevant destinations of Italian wine. In 2017, Italy ranked as the fifth supplier of bottled wine in China by import volume. Furthermore, during the same year, Italy represented the second exporter of sparkling wine of fresh grapes to China with a value of 27 billion Canadian dollars, preceded only by France.
