As of 2023, the largest gold mine operation in the world based on production volume was the Muruntau mine complex, located in Uzbekistan. Production there amounted to 1.8 million ounces that year.
Mining gold is becoming increasingly difficult and expensive as the more accessible known deposits are gradually depleted. However, innovations in the mining industry such as the use of big data, AI, and smart mining technologies are expected to bring down costs and make some (currently uneconomical) reserves accessible in the future.
