Deep sea mining is anticipated by many to be the new frontier in mining, with valuable untapped resources just waiting to be found. Environmental concerns about this emerging practice also abound, however. As of July 2019, the Chinese government had granted 263 licenses for deep sea mining exploration, which corresponded to a land area of 161,211.2 kilometers being explored.
