The government of Moscow planned to increase the number of facial recognition cameras in the city from 1.5 thousand to 150 thousand between 2018 and 2019. In total, 174 thousand surveillance cameras were forecasted in Russia's capital in 2019.
The facial recognition system in Moscow's surveillance cameras was launched in 2018 in preparation for the World Cup.
