Registrations of new battery electric vehicles (BEVs) in European markets came to nearly 505,900 units in the second quarter of 2024. Sales had dipped in the second quarter of 2020 amid the coronavirus pandemic but jumped back in the third quarter.
Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) are classified as plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs). Annual plug-in electric vehicle sales in Europe grew by almost 17 percent between 2022 and 2023. While BEVs rely solely on electricity, PHEVs are powered by both gasoline and electricity. Motorists can recharge both types of PEVs by plugging them into a charger connected to the electric grid. Unlike plug-in electric vehicles, hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) are characterized by an electric motor assisting the internal combustion engine. Fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEV) are also slowly being introduced into the market by leading carmakers such as Toyota.
