Global gas flaring volume by country 2023

Russia emits the most greenhouse gases through gas flaring. In 2023, the natural gas producer flared 28.4 billion cubic meters of natural gas. Gas flaring is a safety measure implemented at refineries and processing plants to prevent over-pressuring of equipment and to dispose of unwanted gas components. Total natural gas flaring worldwide saw an increase to some 147.6 billion cubic meters in 2023.
