In 2023, preliminary figures showed that the gross domestic product (GDP) from the manufacture of wood, cork, straw, and plaited products in Indonesia amounted to 81.98 trillion Indonesian rupiah. Indonesia has one of the largest forest covers globally, and forest resources have played a vital role in supporting Indonesia's economic development.
Timber production in Indonesia
Most Indonesian forestry companies are run by the private sector under concessions, either with natural forest concession rights (HPH) or timber plantation rights (HPHT). Approximately 55 percent of the area granted in concessions is for selective felling of natural forest timber, while about 33 percent is for industrial timber planting. Private-sector-run timber plantations in Indonesia primarily produce acacia wood, whereas public-run timber plantations mainly produce teakwood and pine wood.
Employment in the wood manufacturing sector in Indonesia
As the world's largest exporter of wood, Indonesia's wood manufacturing sector employs one of the country's largest workforces. Since it is a labor-intensive business, Indonesia's furniture industry has been identified as a priority sector for the government. The Indonesian wood products and furniture sector currently employs about 1.9 million people and has an investment value of 1.14 trillion Indonesian rupiah. The majority of Indonesian wood manufacturing and furniture employees work for micro-sized businesses.
