Population of Luxembourg, by gender, 1867-2020
This graph shows the total population of men and women in Luxembourg from 1867 until 2015. The graph begins in 1867 when both populations were exactly 100 thousand people. From this point onwards both populations grow at a similar rate, however the number of women grows at a much more consistent rate than men. Although there are some declines between the entries, the number of women never falls by more than one thousand people. The number of men grows at a very similar rate as the number of women until the turn of the twentieth century, when it then grows by 13 thousand in contrast to six thousand women. This number remains higher until after World War One, when it then drops to within three thousand of the number of women. It grows again during the interwar years and then drops around the Second World War and the number of men and women remains similar until the 1960s. From this point onwards the number of men grows at a lower rate than the number of women, with the largest gap of 11 thousand people in 1985, however the numbers then grew closer in recent decades, and since 2015 the number of men has exceeded the number of women for the first time since 1955.
