Hydro and nuclear power were the main sources of electricity generation in Sweden in 2024, accounting for 38 and 29 percent of the country’s supply, respectively. Sweden is one of the global leaders in decarbonization, with clean energy sources – including hydropower, nuclear, wind, and solar – representing approximately 95 percent of the country’s electricity mix.
New renewables on the rise
Despite currently making up a small share of the electricity matrix, Sweden’s electricity production from solar PV increased by nearly 100-fold in the last decade, reaching more than three terawatt-hours in 2023. Likewise, Sweden’s wind power supply saw significant growth during that time. The country’s renewable energy capacity registered continual growth for more than a decade, reaching 40.6 gigawatts in 2023.
Electricity consumption in Sweden
Along with fellow Scandinavian countries, Sweden was among the leading electricity consumers per capita in Europe, with more than 13 megawatt-hours per person consumed annually. Electricity consumption in Sweden recorded a mostly increasing trend in the past decade, peaking at nearly 177 terawatt-hours in 2021.
