This statistic shows the ways independent music makers who have ever experienced stress, anxiety or depression in relation to their music creation self-medicate worldwide as of April 2019. The data reveals that the majority of independent musicians who have ever suffered from mental health problems such as stress, anxiety and/or depression in relation to their work have used alcohol to self-medicate, and 50 percent used drugs to treat their symptoms.

*The full sample amounted to 1,489 independent music makers worldwide. All were asked 'Have you ever experienced any negative emotions such as stress, anxiety and/or depression in relation to your music creation?' Those who answered 'yes' amounted to 73 percent.
Respondents answering yes were then asked 'Have you ever self-medicated due to negative emotions such as stress, anxiety and/or depression in relation to your music creation?' The sources notes that about one out of two (51 percent) said that they had self-medicated for these reasons. That group was then asked 'In what way have you self-medicated?'
