This statistic shows the price range of passenger transportation modes for a five km city ride in selected regions. According to a global survey, taxis are considerably cheaper in China, costing 3.4 euros for a five km ride, compared to the EU and U.S. where consumers were charged 12.3 and 12.8 euros respectively for a similar journey. From the prices of car-sharing and taxis, the future cost of robotaxis is inferred. It is expected that self-driving taxi services are to enter markets in 2021 and become widely available five years later. Surprisingly, in China, robotaxi rides are predicted to be more expensive than conventional taxi services today, whereas in the EU and U.S., the autonomous service should cost half the price of human operated taxis.
