In 2023, Japan imported approximately 147.66 million kiloliters of crude oil. This represented a decrease compared to around 158.64 million kiloliters in the previous year.

The domestic production volume of crude oil stood at around 490 thousand kiloliters and continues to decline. Since Japan only has scarce natural resources, the country heavily depends on imports. Over 99 percent of the supply is currently covered by foreign crude oil. The main suppliers are Middle Eastern countries such as Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.Usage of oil in Japan
