Share of EV on total number of registered cars in European countries 2018

In 2018, Norway – with more than 49 percent of electric vehicles (EVs) out of the total number of registered cars – was the leading European country in the e-mobility sector. According to the data published by Prometeia, Sweden and the Netherlands followed at a remarkable distance, given that in these countries electric vehicles (EV) accounted for eight and 6.7 percent of the registered cars, respectively.

Global EV market: major players

The figures about Norway come as no surprise, considering that this country is among the major players of the electric vehicles market worldwide together with China and the United States. In fact, in 2018, the three states accounted for 77 percent of the total electric vehicle sales globally .  

E-mobility in Europe

Although there is no EU member state among the countries leading the path towards e-mobility, the market share of passenger battery electric vehicles remarkably increased in the EU , from 0.1 percent in 2011 to 1.1 percent in 2018. Also, the number of charging stations across Europe grew concurrently with the development of the EVs market size in the EU.
