Between 2014 and 2021, the total number of employees in the textile, clothing, and leather manufacturing industry in Italy slightly decreased. However, in 2023, about 470 thousand people were working in this sector, whereas in 2014 this sector employed over 503 thousand people.
In 2020, the average annual gross salary of employees working in the textile, apparel, and accessories industry in Italy was slightly over 27,500 euros. Men working in the apparel industry earned on average 30.08 thousand euros. This figure was roughly five thousand euros more than the average annual gross salary of Italian women working in the same sector.
The importance of the sector for the Italian economy was also reflected in terms of the number of businesses. In 2021, there were over 12 thousand enterprises producing textiles in Italy and almost 29 thousand enterprises manufacturing wearing apparel. Meanwhile, In 2021, however, more than 13.4 thousand enterprises were involved in the manufacturing of leather and related products.
