In the last six years, the production of tomatoes in the Netherlands remained stable. In 2015, the country produced just under 900,000 tons of tomatoes. By 2017, this had grown to 910,000 tons. Between 2017 and 2020 the tomato production in the Netherlands stabilized at 910,000 tons annually, after which it dropped below the 900,000 mark in 2021 and 2022. Tomatoes were the second-most grown vegetable in the Netherlands in 2020, after onions.
Exporting tomatoes
A large share of the tomatoes produced in the Netherlands are not consumed in the country itself. The Dutch tomato export is booming and represented a value of roughly 1.79 billion euros in 2021. The tomato import is valued at only a fraction of that, at roughly 365,000 euros in 2021.
Exporting vegetables
In the last years, the Netherlands has continuously increased the value of its fresh vegetable exports. The total fresh vegetable export from the Netherlands was estimated to be around 5.4 billion euros in 2018. The most important destination countries for vegetables, roots and tubers exported from the Netherlands were three neighboring countries: Germany, Belgium, and France. The trade with Germany represented the largest value. In 2021, Germany imported more than 2.5 billion euros of vegetables, roots and tubers from the Netherlands.
