Inland freight water transport revenue in Austria 2010-2022

Revenues of the Austrian inland freight water transport industry are projected to decline drastically from a decade high of 126 million U.S. dollars in 2011 to only 22 million U.S. dollars by 2022. Amongst key reasons include the falling investments in the transport infrastructure, and the growing user preference towards alternate transport services such as road and rail. In fact, water transport accounts for less than five percent of the country’s total inland freight transport, with road transport accounting for a majority 65 percent and rail transport accounting for 31 percent. As of 2018, the amount of freight transported by inland waterways was nearly 1.5 billion tonne-kilometers. In comparison, the total freight transported by rail amounted to approximately 22 billion tonne-kilometers while that by road amounted to 18.6 billion tonne-kilometers.

The total length of inland waterways in the country, including navigable rivers, canals, and other inland bodies of water is approximately 358 kilometers, as per details from the CIA World Factbook.
