Share of vegetarians in Spain 2022, by age group

During a survey carried out between July 2021 and June 2022, approximately two percent of Spanish people aged between 20 and 29 said they were following a vegetarian diet. The share of vegetarians among respondents aged between 30 and 39 was at five percent.

Vegetarianism in Spain

The share of young adults who are vegetarian or vegan in Spain is approximately four percent, somewhat lower than in other European countries. The market value of plant-based food in Spain amounted to approximately 448 million euros in 2020. The large majority of that value is generated by plant-based milk alternatives.

Consumption of plant-based beverages in Spain

In recent years, plant-based beverages have become more and more popular in Spain. Over two-thirds of Spanish survey respondents who purchase plant-based beverages do so at least once a week. The main distribution channels of plant-based beverages are supermarkets and hypermarkets. Although plant-based beverages are often consumed by vegans, they are also increasingly consumed by Spanish consumers who do not consider themselves vegan or vegetarian. The main reasons of Spanish consumers for substituting milk with plant-based beverages are for better digestion or preferring the flavor.
