EU Terrorism

Threat of Terror Particularly High in France

According to a recent study by Europol, 142 people died and 379 were injured in terrorist attacks in EU member states in 2016. Nationalist and separatist extremism accounted for most terror attacks in the EU amounting to 99 last year. Out of 142 failed, foiled and completed attacks across Europe, 43 were accredited with religious, leftist or right-wing extremism while six attacks were carried out by the so-called Islamic State, causing the greatest share of fatalities and casualties in 2016. In relation to that, the report further reveals that most arrests (718) were linked to Islamist terrorism.

The infographic below lists the five EU member states that were most often targeted in terror attacks in recent years. France in particular was in the crosshairs of terror whereas the threat of terrorism in Germany remained very low until 2016.
