The New York based company Metlife leads the ranking of American insurers in 2017, with total assets amounting to approximately $898.8 billion. Overall, the United States is by far the country with the largest insurance industry in the world. In 2015 direct insurance premiums had a written worth of $1.32 trillion. Japan was the second largest insurance market with direct insurance premiums written worth $449 billion.
