How Populism Is Harming Democracy In Eastern Europe

According to a report from Freedom House, the populist tide is rising in Central and Eastern Europe. For the second year in a row, so-called consolidated authoritarian regimes outnumber consolidated democracies. The list of consolidated authoritatian regimes includes Azerbaijan, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan, The problem isn't only manifesting itself in the former-Soviet Union. Several EU member states have also seen their democracy scores decrease and that list of countries includes Poland and Hungary.
