Targets of Terror in 2016

According to Aon's 2017 Risk Maps for Political Risk, Terrorism and Political Violence, published today, the most common target of terror attacks in 2016 was private citizens and their property - a total of 1,342 globally. Militaries were the second most-affected, suffering almost 800 attacks. Overall, 2016 saw a year-on-year increase in terror attacks of 14 percent (3,633 to 4,151). While the vast majority of attacks occurred outside of Western countries, it was these parts of the world that saw one of the largest proportionate increases. In 2016 there were 96 attacks - 174 percent up on the 35 in 2015.
