Mosul

Over 200,000 people have been displaced from Mosul

Iraqi government forces are making steady progress in their bid to retake the northern city of Mosul from the so-called Islamic State. Yesterday, reports emerged that Iraqi troops had retaken the city's main government offices and were within site of the Great Mosque of al-Nuri. The mosque is hugely symbolic to ISIS and it's the location where their leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, proclaimed the creation of a "caliphate" in July 2014. According to the International Organization of Migration, the number of people displaced from Mosul has risen steadily throughout the battle, recently surpassing the 200,000 mark.
