Renewable Energy
GreenTech: The Top Companies
Apple does its name justice, and goes even greener. According to Greenpeace’s latest ClickGreen report, 83 percent of the energy Apple uses is produced using renewables. This makes Apple, for the third year in a row, the most environmentally friendly of the world’s leading tech companies.
With 67 percent, Facebook follows in spot two of tech companies with the highest proportion of renewables used within their power supply. “Facebook and Apple have been leading the sector in operational transparency, providing regular and easy-to-access reporting of their data center energy footprint,” states the report, highlighting that greenwashing has not infiltrated the leading tech companies in regard to renewable energy.
In the report, Greenpeace highlights some of the shortcuts that companies employ to appear environmentally friendly. While there is universal agreement on a range of energy technologies that are considered renewables, some utilities are pushing to expand definitions to include industrial scale biomass, large-scale hydroelectric, fuel cells and other energy sources.
