Online Furniture Retail

Swedish Retail Giant vs. US Online Challenger

With 37 billion in annual sales, Swedish powerhouse IKEA remains the firm favorite among furniture shoppers around the world. While IKEA has managed to hit the web with editorials about its recent product addition, the IKEA bike, its e-commerce sales remain moderate.

With more than double IKEA’s online sales, Wayfair.com has become the e-Commerce giant in the furniture and home décor segment. Despite Wayfair’s explosive growth, the Boston-based company has been posting losses for years. Operating expenses for advertising, administration and technology have been on the rise, and keep cutting into Wayfair’s bountiful sales.

Analysts from Statista’s Digital Market Outlook predict that the e-Commerce market for furniture and appliances will continue to grow at an average of 11.5 percent until 2021.
