U.S. Voter Turnout In Perspective

Provisional estimates of voter turnout in the 2016 U.S. election indicate a higher rate than in 2012 but the states still lags behind a number of other developed nations when it comes to going to the polls. While Belgium and Turkey have a system of compulsory voting, putting them at 87.2 and 84.3 percent respectively, Sweden had a turnout in 2014 of 82.6 percent - 25.7 percentage points higher that the United States.

Note: while voting is compulsory in Australia (91 percent registered voter turnout in 2016), the figures for voting age population were not available at the time of production.
