Conflict has Displaced More Than Half the Syrian Population

The Syrian conflict, and with it the refugee crisis, shows no sign of abating. All efforts to even enforce partial cease fires in places like the city of Aleppo have not been successful. Another one is planned to come into effect on Friday.

Needless to say that, like in any other armed conflict, the civilian population suffers most. According to data compiled by VoxEU, more than half of Syrians are on the move, either within Syria itself or have fled to neighbouring countries or further afar. As our chart shows, the number of refugees who have been voluntarily offered shelter by third parties is minimal.
