Food Waste
Britain's Five Most Wasted Foods
Food waste is something a great many of us are guilty of every day. From the old cucumber lingering in the back of the fridge, to that chicken wing that proved to be a bridge too far, food gets wasted on a large scale. While consumers clearly have a duty to improve their buying and eating habits, it is the food industry itself which is perhaps in the best position to make the most sweeping and effective changes.
This infographic uses data from Wrap to show the five sub-sectors responsible for the most waste along the grocery supply chain. Of the total 1.7 million tonnes thrown away in 2015, meat, poultry and fish accounted for a 31 percent share. While a lot of the waste in this sub-sector is unavoidable, Wrap estimates that 30 percent of it could be avoided.
