Emmy Awards

Netflix and FX Dethrone HBO at the Emmy Nominations

Continuing their tussle for TV supremacy, Netflix scored a win over HBO on Wednesday, as the streaming giant won more nominations for the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards, which will be given out on September 15, 2024. Netflix won 107 nominations this year, up from 103 in 2023, while HBO was relegated to third place for the first time since 1995. The pay TV giant saw its nominations slip from 127 in 2023 to a decade low of 91 this year, as some of the shows that powered its critical success over the past few years (e.g. Game of Thrones, Succession) have concluded.

The true winner of Wednesday's nominations was FX though, as the cable network saw its tally surge from 37 to 93, mainly thanks to the success of FX on Hulu exclusive "The Bear" and historical drama “Shōgun”, which topped the list of most nominated programs with 23 and 25 nominations, respectively. More importantly, FX also dominated the major award categories - Best Series, Acting, Writing and Directing - receiving 39 nods over 28 major nominations won by Netflix and Apple TV+.

The Emmys are awarded annually by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences for excellence in the television industry. They are the most prestigious prize in television, equivalent to what the Academy Awards (Oscars) are to the film industry. In recent years, streaming services started making their mark at the Emmys, with Netflix earnings its first nominations in 2013. Since then, the streaming giant has grown into the second largest player next to HBO, with its total number of nominations climbing from 14 in 2013 to more than 100 every year since 2018.
