Leicester's victory over the Premier League's financial giants
Leicester City are the 2015/16 Barclays Premier League Champions. Nobody in their right mind could have anticipated that being a legitimate sentence to write even 12 months ago. Having ended the 14/15 season just six points above the relegation zone, The Foxes started this campaign as 5000-1 outsiders for the title.
Since then, new manager Claudio Ranieri has made the impossible possible. With two games left to play, Leicester have won 22, drawn 11, and lost only 3 with the championship being sealed on Monday night after Tottenham failed to get the win they needed at Chelsea to stay in the race.
There are many things that make this championship victory remarkable and almost unbelievable. One of which is the cost of the Leicester squad. The CIES Football Observatory calculated in September that Ranieri's side cost a total of 52.8 million pounds. In the big money world of top flight football, this really is peanuts. The infographic below compares Leicester to the six most valuable squads in the Premier League. At the top of this particular table are Manchester City, with a total of 411 million pounds. In the table that matters, despite this huge outlay, they are currently sitting fourth.
Such an against the odds triumph, breaking the 21 year dominance of United, City, Chelsea and Arsenal, has endeared Leicester to almost all neutral fans this season. The scenes at the King Power Stadium on Saturday should be rather special.
