International Day of Women and Girls in Science

Where Women in Are (Not) Working in STEM

An average of 40 percent of the STEM workforce is filled by women, according to the most recent estimates by the International Labour Organization, based on an analysis of 84 countries. Mongolia (57 percent), Belarus (54 percent), Lesotho (52 percent) and the United States (52 percent) were among the countries with the highest representations of females in these roles, while the United Arab Emirates (23 percent), Burkina Faso (20 percent) and Iraq (17 percent) were among those at the other end of the spectrum.

According to the ILO, large disparities still exist in certain occupations beneath the STEM umbrella, with women remaining significantly underrepresented in areas such as civil engineering and software development.
