Hotel Chains are Becoming More Asset-Light

According to a McKinsey, in 2023 hotel chains owned as little as 2% of their branded hotels on average. Instead, the franchised portion of chain businesses grew in favor of an asset-light model. The managed property portion of chain business operations, however, has not changed drastically since 2013. The study suggests that the those chain hotels that maintain ownership are more likely to be luxury hotel chains that want to maintain control of standards at their hotels.
