Where Do American Students Have The Highest Debt?
Student debt in the United States stands at a whopping $1.3 trillion - some experts consider this higher than the rest of the world combined. It causes countless economic problems with young couples holding off on buying houses, failure to pay off car loans, rising default rates - the list goes on and on.
Where in the United States is the debt burden the heaviest? Washington D.C. has the highest average debt levels by quite a stretch. Student borrowers in the U.S. capital had an average debt of $40,885 in January 2015. There is a $10,000 gap to second placed Georgia where the average indebted student owes $30,443. The top three is rounded off by Maryland where student who have borrowed have an average debt mountain of $30,064.
