6 in 10 Democrats Would Pick Harris, the Rest Is Not so Sure

U.S. President Joe Biden withdrew his candidacy for the 2024 presidential elections yesterday and soon after announced his endorsement for Vice President Kamala Harris to take his place as the next Democratic nominee. Harris, who has confirmed that she aims to run for president in the November election, has already seen the support of a host of key figures within the Democratic Party, including Pete Buttigieg, Gavin Newsom, Josh Shapiro, Roy Cooper, Elizabeth Warren, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the Clintons.

While the outcome most likely will be Harris as the next Democratic nominee, it has not been officially decided. According to a poll conducted by YouGov after Biden stepped down among Democrats or Democrat-leaning voters, 60 percent say that Harris should be nominated as the Democratic candidate for the 2024 presidential elections, while around 21 percent said that it should be someone else and 19 percent said they were not sure. As this chart shows, Harris has fairly low support among Independents, with only 30 percent saying they think she should be nominated, while 36 said they thought it should be someone else and 34 percent said they did not know.

In the same survey, respondents were also asked who they would vote for in the presidential election if Harris and Trump were the candidates. Trump received slightly higher scores at 44 percent compared to Harris’ 39 percent. This is a marginally wider gap than had previously been between Trump and Biden. However, recent polls differ depending on the source.
