How Often Do Americans Travel?

Around a third of Americans enjoy two to three vacations per year. Meanwhile, just over a quarter have not traveled for non-business related trips at all in the past 12 months, and around a fifth of respondents have traveled once. Six or more vacations, on the other hand, were rarer. This is according to the latest Statista Consumer Insights survey, carried out between July 2022 and June 2023 - a period in which the tourism industry saw the greatest recovery to pre-pandemic levels.

The United States was the third most popular travel destination worldwide in 2022, bringing in an estimated 51 million international tourist arrivals that year alone. However, it’s actually the domestic leisure travel sector that has historically accounted for the lion's share of travel spending in the country. According to the U.S. Travel Association, in 2021, total direct travel spending of domestic leisure travelers in the U.S. amounted to $751 billion.
