Who's Shopping at China's AliExpress?

In 2010, Alibaba Group founded its online marketplace AliExpress, which Chinese retailers can use to offer their products worldwide. Initially often ridiculed for the cheap goods on offer, the company has now gained a foothold in Europe and Latin America, data from Statista Consumer Insights shows.

In the Netherlands, for example, the e-commerce platform is the the third popular in the country at 28 percent. Spaniards' preference for AliExpress is also reflected in the data - 38 percent in the country had used it within the past 12 months, the highest result among nations surveyed. In Madrid, Spain, the brand's first physical store, AliExpress Plaza, opened in the Xanadú mall in 2019. Comparably high shares of people in Brazil and Mexico are also shopping at the website, according to the survey.

In Germany, every tenth respondent had ordered from AliExpress in the previous year, the same as in the United States. The country with the lowest share of respondents fond of AliExpress shopping was Sweden at with only 7 percent, followed by South Korea with 8 percent.
