Gaming Remains Sony's Most Important Entertainment Segment
Between April and June, Sony's revenue with video games, network services relating to games, music and video and gaming hardware reached $5.3 billion, which comprised 26 percent of the company's total quarterly revenue. While this segment is the biggest revenue driver in Sony's entertainment portfolio, it also shows the most seasonal fluctuations.
The Japanese conglomerate's music, TV and movie revenue stayed comparably constant over the past twelve months. However, its games division seems highly reliant on the traditionally consumption-heavy fourth quarter. Between October and December 2022, for example, the company made $8.5 billion in current prices with games, consoles and game-related services compared to just $5 billion in current prices in the prior quarter. Revenue from the Pictures and Music segments remained between $2.1 billion and $2.5 billion in the analyzed periods. The most important subsegment in Sony's fiscal year 2023 was console and related hardware sales. Between April 2022 and March 2023, it generated around $11 billion or 13 percent of the company's total revenue at current prices.
With a total gaming segment revenue of $25 billion in its past fiscal year, Sony contributes a sizable chunk to the global revenue with video games. Different estimates place worldwide revenues in the gaming industry between $180 billion and $220 billion for 2022.
