The Premier League's Most/Least Clinical Finishers

Erling Haaland is certainly living up to the lofty expectations set for the new Manchester City forward in his first Premier League season. With 26 goals in just 24 games, the 22-year-old Norwegian international seems unstoppable.

When looking at the xG metric, or 'expected goals', however, we can see that he isn't just living up to expectations: statistically at least, he's smashing them. According to the measure, which calculates the probability of a goal being scored from a position and situation a player finds themselves in, Haaland should have scored 18 goals by now - a tally that would have already been impressive enough.

With a difference between his xG and his goals scored of 7.6, that makes him by far the most clinical overachiever in the league this season. Not too far behind, experiencing a post-World Cup revival, is Manchester United's Marcus Rashford. His 14 goals compare to an xG of just 9.7.

At the other end of the scale another Premier League debutant, Liverpool's Darwin Núñez, has been having a far tougher time living up to expectations - both of the fans and of the xG metric. With 9.1 expected goals, the Uruguayan has only managed to convert six times. It could be worse, though. Leeds striker Patrick Bamford, who bagged 17 goals in his first Premier League season for the club, has an xG of 5.2 but only has one goal to his name at this stage of the campaign.
