Africa's Top Universities

The Times Higher Education (THE) has released the roundup of the leading universities in Africa. Topping the list, comes the University of Cape Town in South Africa. The institutions in second and third place are also South African, with Stellenbosch and the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg.

As our chart shows, five out of the top eight places ranked by THE are in South Africa. Ghana’s University of Cape Coast comes in fourth place, while Ethiopia’s Addis Ababa University is joint sixth with Egypt’s Aswan University. In the full list of rankings, which includes 46 universities, 23 of them are in Egypt and 11 in South Africa.

In tenth place, comes Algeria’s Ferhat Abbas Sétif University 1, tied with Nigeria’s University of Lagos, Kenya’s University of Nairobi, South Africa’s North-West University, as well as Egypt’s Kafrelsheikh, Mansoura and Suez Canal Universities.

According to the online UK magazine, the rankings are determined by 13 indicators that include subcategories of teaching, research volume and reputation, research impact, innovation and international outlook.
