Nearly 1,300 Migrants Cross English Channel in a Day
Nearly 1,300 migrants crossed the English Channel in small boats on Monday, marking the highest daily total since records began in 2018.
The UK's Ministry of Defence confirmed that 1,295 people traveled from France to the English port of Dover in 27 small boats that day. The previous record number had been 1,185 people on 11 November last year.
As our chart shows, numbers skyrocketed after a lull of three days, as bad weather meant no small boats were seen making the crossing Friday to Sunday.
More than 22,600 people have arrived in the UK since the start of the year, which is nearly double the 12,500 that managed to make the crossing by the same time last year. Navigating the channel, which has busy shipping lanes, is extremely dangerous and has claimed the lives of at least 203 people since 2014.
